Health Benefits of Apricot (Mammea americana)
Flavonoids. See that rich yellow-orange colour of apricots? This tells us they are rich in flavonoids. Flavonoids are phytonutrients with antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. They may work synergistically with vitamins, that is they enhance their health benefits when consumed together.
Vitamins. Apricot is a good source of several vitamins to include vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B6, and vitamin E. Note well that vitamina A, C and E are antioxidants which protect cells from damage by free radicals.
Minerals. Apricot contains potassium, magnesium and calcium.
Carbohydrates. Apricot is an excellent source of natural sugars including fructose and sucrose; that’s why its sooo sweet.
Dietary Fibre. Apricot contains dietary fibre which is important for digestive health.
Additionally, the seeds of the fruit are used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments including eczema, psoriasis and helminth infections. Store at room temperature until ripe. Consume within a few days of ripening for optimal flavor.
